Method 1: Disabling memory consuming extensions and themes
- Extensions and themes can cause Firefox to use more memory than it normally would. Before disabling the extensions and themes, we can confirm and determine if an extension or theme is causing Firefox to use too much memory.
- To determine if an extension or theme is causing Firefox to use too much memory start Firefox in Safe mode. In Safe Mode, extensions and themes are disabled.
How to start Firefox in Safe mode:
Step 1: You can start Firefox by holding shift key
Step 2: At the top of Firefox window, click on Firefox button->Help ->Restart with add-ons disabled
Firefox will start up with Firefox safe mode dialog. After Firefox starts in Safe Mode, test for the memory utilized. If it shows any changes in memory utilized perform the below steps to disable the extensions:
Step 3: At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button->click on add-ons tab
Step 4: In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the on Extensions panel
Step 5: Click the name of an extension in the list to select it.
Step 6: Click Disable and restart the Firefox
Method 2: Turn off hardware acceleration
With some graphics card and graphics driver setups, Firefox may crash or have troubles. To turn off the hardware acceleration
Step 1: At the top of Firefox window, click on Firefox button->Options
Step 2: Select advanced tab->general tab
Step 3: Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available
Step 4: Select Firefox button, click exit, start Firefox normally.
Method 3: Switch to default Theme
Step 1: At the top of the Firefox window, click on Firefox button Add-ons button
Step 2: The add-ons manager tab will open, select appearance panel
Step 3: Select the default theme, then click Enable button
Step 4: Click restart Firefox and check the memory utilized
Method 4: Minimize the memory in Fire fox
Step 1: Click on the Firefox button
Step 2: Select about memory
Step 3: Click on reduce memory usage button
